How we cultivated teamwork and leadership skills in chief engineers
and captains onboard.
Our client is one of the world’s largest shipping company by number of seafarers employed onboard. Their ships are operated by highly specialised and well qualified technical professionals such as chief engineers and captains with an average salary of USD 12,000 per month and they lead their respective teams of qualified professionals on account of their knowledge and experience. However, at no stage in their career, they are given training on teamwork and leadership skills, the two soft skills that are bedrocks of safe and efficient ship’s operations. As a result, they lead without knowing how to bring out the best productivity out of their respective teams.
The company identified this gap and hired the service of Comaea Consulting to give these team heads necessary leadership and teambuilding training. The company expected us to design and develop a tailor-made training programme for the heads, which they wanted to implement across their ship management level employeepool working onboard.
Comaea Consulting conducted the training need analysis, designed a uniform programme and a consistent delivery method through a 2-day training workshop. Till date, we have trained more than 1000 senior merchant navy officers for over four years, across the company’s vast fleet of ships spanning three countries.
